Have your say on States' Members' pay

Tuesday 23 April 2024

As part of the Independent States' Members' Pay Review Panel's review into States Member's pay for the next political term, the panel has launched a survey today inviting individuals, representative groups, and organisations from Guernsey and Alderney to have their say.

The results of the survey will help to inform the panel's review, alongside the results of a questionnaire that was circulated to all Deputies earlier in the year.

Once the panel has completed the consultation phase, they will then consider pay levels for the range of States' Member and non-States' Member roles.  It will then recommend whether the current levels of pay are appropriate for the varying responsibilities.

At the end of each political term, the outgoing Assembly considers the recommendation of the Independent States' Members' Pay Review Panel and sets the rates of pay that are applicable from the new political term.

The standard remuneration for a Deputy under the States' Pension age is currently £43,036.  Remuneration is structured into 3 bands depending on a Member's role and level of responsibility, with Committee Presidents, for example, being paid more than the standard rate.  Further details of the bands and current rates of States' Members' pay are available from the Your Deputies page of the States of Guernsey website.

Mr Richard Hamilton, Chair of the Panel, said:

"The Panel wants to provide every opportunity for islanders to share their views on States' Members' remuneration for the next political term, and this survey helps us achieve that aim.

For those who can't access the survey online, paper copies can be collected or posted out on request.  We've also organised 3 drop-in events at convenient places in Guernsey where people can come along and speak to a member of the panel about our role and pick up a copy of the survey at the same time.

We're keen to hear a wide range of views about States' Members' pay and will balance the results of this survey against a range of other factors before reaching our conclusions."

The survey is available online at www.gov.gg/DeputiesPaySurvey.  Paper copies can be collected from the reception of Sir Charles Frossard House and Edward T Wheadon House in Guernsey, or from the States of Alderney's General Office, which is located on the ground floor of the Island Hall in Alderney.

The panel is also holding three drop-in events simultaneously on Saturday 27 April across Guernsey from 9:30am to midday. The locations are:

Requests for assistance in completing the survey, or for a paper copy to be sent by post, can be made to Chloe Divers, Graduate Officer, on 223411 or by email at smpr2024@gov.gg

The survey will close on 26 May 2024.
