The government of Guernsey sent representatives to three of the UK's Party Conferences this year (Liberal Democrat, Conservative, Labour); perhaps the last such Conferences before the forthcoming UK General Election. Last week, it was the Labour Party Conference - which provided an opportunity to engage with members of the UK's Shadow Cabinet.
Deputy Peter Ferbrache, President of the Policy & Resources Committee, said:
"Following a busy and intense few days in direct discussions, in the main Conference hall and at fringe events, we have been able to learn more about Labour's priorities and policies and the mood of conference attendees. I am pleased that Guernsey representatives met various members of the Shadow Cabinet and saw some potential Labour MP candidates.
It was particularly helpful to have a first discussion with the recently-appointed Shadow Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice, Shabana Mahmood MP, because the Ministry of Justice has the UK Government lead for the relationship with the Crown Dependencies.
I was also pleased to meet the Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rachel Reeves MP, who spoke strongly on the need for economic growth and inward investment. This is something for which Guernsey is well placed, through the close connection of our economies and the significant flows of investment from the island to the UK."
Deputy Nick Moakes, member of the Committee for Economic Development and lead for international trade and financial services matters, said:
"Over the last two weeks, I have represented Guernsey at both the Conservative and Labour Party Conferences. They were incredibly useful and enabled engagement with UK politicians across the political spectrum. I also met Ambassadors and senior embassy officials from around the world, including many whose countries are involved in ongoing trade discussions with the UK and, by extension, Guernsey.
The three UK Party Conferences attended by Guernsey representatives provided us with opportunities to build relationships and promote Guernsey's history, our future interests and our economic aspirations."
An earlier media release about Guernsey's attendance at UK Party Conferences was issued on 07 October 2023.
