Surface and safety improvements proposed for Les Banques

Tuesday 02 March 2021

Traffic & Highway Services (THS) is planning to take the opportunity of planned road resurfacing works starting at the end of May to make some simple changes to enhance safety and convenience for people in Les Banques area near the Red Lion Roundabout.

There are currently no crossings for people walking along the Inter Harbour Route between Elizabeth Avenue and Victoria Avenue, an area characterised by high density housing. THS plan (among other improvements) to install a new central refuge with illuminated bollards just to the south of the slipway. This will make it safer and easier for wheelchair users, people with buggies and people with visual impairments in particular to cross this busy stretch.

As part of this proposal, dropped kerbs with blister paving will be installed on the footpaths directly opposite the refuge. These improvements will be subject to planning permission for which THS will shortly be submitting an application to the Development & Planning Authority.

The majority of the work planned for May is to improve the worn road surface, but it also includes upgrading the signage, road markings and blister paving along this section of the cycle path and footpath.

Director of Traffic & Highway Services, Karl Guille said:

"Wherever possible we want to do everything we can to improve our roads to make them safer and more convenient for all road users. These simple changes will help Islanders living and travelling through the area, especially those on foot."
