A new Sixth Form Centre next to the existing Grammar School was completed in August 2005 and provides much needed additional teaching and recreational space for the school's ever growing sixth form.
The design of the building exploits the use of natural light and ventilation wherever possible. It has been built in keeping with the traditional brick-work design of the original building, using contemporary materials, such as glass and sandstone, to add a modern feel.
The design of the Sixth Form Centre recognises that the students are progressing into their adult life.
The building is set out as a two-storey block with a central circulation area from which all classrooms and other facilities are accessed. The new Centre is linked to the existing school building at first floor level via a glazed walkway. The circulation areas feature display areas, informal seating and student lockers.
The twelve classrooms provide additional facilities for five curriculum areas: Psychology, Media Studies, Film Studies, Business Studies and Sports Science - some of the most popular courses offered by the Grammar School, plus general teaching spaces. Several of the rooms have moveable partitions to increase the flexibility of these teaching spaces.
A private study work area is equipped with a number of PCs to allow up to 22 students to work independently in an area away from the classrooms.
The double height entrance area provides an open airy environment, welcoming visitors and students into the Centre. An open-plan communal area and refectory leads off the reception area, providing the students with a place to relax, have a drink or snack, or work individually or in groups. A Careers Area, meeting room and internet terminals provide students with all the information and resources they need to select higher education courses and institutions or find out more about various career paths or job applications.
Students' artwork is displayed in prominent areas around the new building.
Staff facilities, meeting rooms and administration offices complete the Sixth Form Centre.
All areas are accessible to wheelchair users.
