Update - Traffic Lights at Bulwer Avenue

Thursday 10 May 2012

Environment Department response to media enquiry from Guernsey Press.

Guernsey Press Enquiry:

Below are some questions that the Press would like to put to the department with regards to potential traffic lights at Bulwer Avenue.

We have heard talks of traffic lights being put on Bulwer Avenue - can the department confirm this?

If so, what are the reasons for doing so?

Do the dept agree that it would cause a great amount of upset for drivers if traffic lights were installed - we have seen on Facebook a few people have expressed their anger if this was the case?

Have other traffic measures been considered?

The deadline for response is 4pm so if I am able to get a response before then that would be brilliant.

Response:

One of the conditions of granting Planning Approval for the use of part of Longue Hougue Reclamation site for the storage of materials and equipment associated with the Airport Pavements Project was the requirement for the contractor to install temporary traffic signals at the junction of Longue Hougue and Bulwer Avenue for the duration of the contract. This measure is required in order to manage the potential conflict between heavy and slow moving site traffic exiting Longue Hougue and existing traffic movements along Bulwer Avenue.

New traffic signals with the ability to detect, control and manage demand from the various arms of the junction are expected to be installed shortly and will remain in place for the duration of the Airport Pavements Project. In the interim, temporary mobile traffic signals have been introduced in order to allow the commencement of the aggregate haul route. Unfortunately, these mobile signals have been experiencing some technical difficulties and, on occasion, have had to be switched off. The signal faults have now been rectified and the junction is operating under positive traffic management control.
