Recycling is no tall order for Liberation Day

Wednesday 08 May 2013

Revellers will have plenty of opportunity to recycle in Town this Liberation Day, and Public Services will be scaling new heights to get that message across.

The Department has enlisted the help of some brightly coloured stilt-walkers who'll be mixing with the crowds to help spread the word. And they'll be telling islanders recycling is no tall order, with more than 20 collection bins for plastic and cans spread out around the sea front.

The recycling team will also be on hand outside the Tourist Information Centre, where some creative transformations will be going on.  Local artist Sterone1 will be breathing new life into furniture from the Longue Hougue reuse facility, to give an entirely new look guaranteed to brighten up any room!

Public Services' recycling officer Tina Norman-Ross said the team was getting into the spirit.

'We have had a stall on Liberation Day before, basically to have a presence for anyone who needed advice.  This year we wanted to do something a little different, which would be a bit of fun but still provide some practical help,' she said.

'So we're providing lots of recycling bins to hopefully reduce the amount of litter collected, and we'll be very visible with our high-up helpers.  The furniture revival also promises to be really colourful and engaging, and may inspire islanders to consider using their own creative flair to liven up old items that might otherwise just go to waste.'

'We hope anyone who comes to Town will enjoy it, and we'll still be on hand if anyone has any recycling questions, or wants advice on how to save money by reducing their food waste.'
