Some town retailers have said parking in town is more of a threat to local business than online shopping.
The department has just announced plans to increase 2hr spaces on crown pier to 3hr. But does it have any other plans to ease the parking situation over Christmas, such as a park and ride scheme?
Is this issue something that will be addressed in the RTS?
Environment Department response:
No other proposals are currently envisaged in addition to the aforementioned initiative. However, it should be recognised that demand on longer-term (5 - 10hr) parking at weekends, especially in the winter months, is somewhat lower and, hence, shoppers will have a greater opportunity to use these spaces too.
Sir Charles Frossard House car park is also available for public parking at weekends and there are regular bus services providing a viable and convenient alternative for shoppers who might also want to take the opportunity to meet up with friends in Town for a bite to eat or something to drink.
Availability of public car parking is but one aspect that will need to be considered as part of the Department's forthcoming On-Island Transport Strategy. These matters are due to be considered by the Environment Board in the coming weeks as it prepares a report for consideration by the States of Deliberation in March or April of next year.
