Health and Social Services Department response to media enquiry from BBC TV
QUESTION:
As promised - here's the link to the school dental petition group I mentioned.
https://www.facebook.com/groups/682992895057151/
I'm hoping to run the story tomorrow - am just waiting for confirmation from the parent that set up the group about times etc. So would be great if I could get a comment from health on whether they are reviewing the service, and what evidence there is about the impact the decision to scale it back in 2006 has had.
RESPONSE:
A spokesperson for HSSD said:
"The service remains under constant review to ensure that allocated resources are used efficiently. We remain committed to providing effective care focused on those who have the greatest need. In support of the existing services, we actively promote good oral health and prevention of disease.
It is important that parents adopt a responsible approach to their children's dental care. We would always encourage a well-balanced diet, brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and regular check-ups with a private dentist to ensure that mouths and teeth are well looked after."
