Update - Costs of Storm Damage to Coastal

Share this page

Tuesday 14 January 2014

Environment Department response to media enquiry from Channel Television.

Channel Television enquiry:

We are hoping to find out a figure for the total cost of damage caused by the weather over the past few weeks. I have outlined questions below.

Aside from Fermain and Perelle how many other points around the coast were damaged ?

What is the total bill for repairing all of the damage across Guernsey?

What preventative measure are going to be put in place for when this happens again?

We are aware of the States' long term sea defence strategy but are more short term strategies needed?

Environment Department Response:

The areas most affected have been:

    Fermain         wall undermined and minor damage to slipway;
    Perelle           minor damage to coastal wall;
    Portelet          damage to pier, base of slipway and open joints on vertical face;
    Saints             slipway undermined and masonry repair to end of harbour;
    Cobo              minor damage to coastal wall;
    Vazon             minor damage to coastal wall;
    Rocquaine    minor damage to coastal wall;
    Catioroc         minor damage to coastal wall;
    Herm              damage to the Harbour and Rosaire.

Various areas of rock armouring at Portelet, Pequeries and La Miellette also require re-profiling. and The above areas have been prioritised and works have commenced to undertake the repairs. The cost of these repairs are estimated at £40,000.

Other damage associated with the storm includes the stone steps at Cobo, Perelle and Le Catioroc and the path by the L'Ancresse kiosk.

In terms of short term strategies, the Department, with the assistance of States Property Services engineers, has an on-going monitoring, maintenance and repair programme for Coastal Defences funded through the Environment Departments general revenue budget.

From time to time, major capital works are also necessary, eg the repairs at breached walls at L'Eree and Perelle in recent years and the construction of new defences at Cobo and Le Catioroc. These repairs can be as a result of storm damage or works identified during routine monitoring.
