Guernsey Press Enquiry:
What interim measures is the department putting in place while the traffic lights at crown pier are out. This is normally a busy junction for pedestrians.
What is being put in place to allow people to cross safely?
Environment Department Response:
The Environment Department has installed two traffic signal out-of-action signs on each approach to the crossing to give clear warning to drivers that the signals are not in operation. These signs make drivers aware that pedestrians could be crossing the road without signal control and should encourage drivers to be extra vigilant and travel more slowly.
The Department has also suspended the un/loading bay on the west side of the road near Pier Steps, so as to improve the visibility for pedestrians crossing from this side.
On-site work and off-site preparation work is being undertaken by States Works Department signal engineers and Guernsey Electricity to replace the wiring and signal controller box as quickly as possible. The equipment will also be raised slightly to try to avoid future damage. It is hoped that the signals may be back in operation by the end of tomorrow afternoon.
The Department and the Guernsey Police both agree that the existing measures in place are appropriate as a temporary measure and no road safety concerns have been raised by the public.
