Sea Defence plans gone to tender

Monday 16 June 2014

Media Enquiry from Amber Stark, Island FM:

I have heard this morning that the coastal defence plans have gone to tender, is that correct?

Do you have any further information?

Could we please arrange an interview?

Environment Department Response:

There are three tenders currently in progress on coastal defence:

(1) As part of the Coastal Defence Flood Risk project the Environment Department is inviting expressions of interest for a feasibility study for St Sampson Harbour. This is in line with the States' decision in 2013 to confirm that St Sampson was the first priority area for coastal defence works to mitigate the effects of coastal flooding associated with sea level rise.

The feasibility study will identify a number of possible options for the installation of flood mitigation measures that will be most effective in protecting the island's essential infrastructure against coastal flood. The study will also provide details of the likely budget costs and ongoing operational costs of the measures evaluated in this process.

Any company experienced in this type of work interested in undertaking the feasibility study is required to return the pre-tender questionnaire by 23rd June. As the feasibility study is subject to a tender process it would not be appropriate for the States to provide an estimate of cost at this time.

It should be stressed that the tender is only for the feasibility study NOT for any resultant engineering works to deliver any of the options that might be identified.

(2) Vazon sea wall repair - the result of the tender process will be announced in early July, the expectation is that works will commence three weeks later.

(3) Coastal walls - repointing repairs - Expressions of interest are invited from companies for the repointing of areas of coastal walls damaged around the island during the winter storms.
