Update - Jellyfish

Monday 28 July 2014

Media Enquiry from Island FM:

Do jellyfish come under your remit? If so - have there been any official reports of the large numbers of jellyfish on our beaches, and does the Department know which type they are?

I know we did something recently about a relatively harmless species along the west coast but it seems there are increasing numbers of jellyfish everywhere.

Environment Department Response:

The Environment Department is responsible for managing the Islands beaches and, occasionally, will issue general information and advice to the General Public.

I can advise that the Department is aware of Jellyfish (occasionally in larger numbers than normally witnessed) being seen around the island both in the sea and being washed up on the Island's beaches.

As per the attached media release, issued on 10th July 2014, the Department's advice to the public remains the same:   It is advisable not to touch any jellyfish found on the beach.
