Uptake of Allotments

Wednesday 13 August 2014

Media Enquiry from Julien Morel, Channel Television:

Hope all is well. I was wondering if you could help me with some statistics? We are filming a report tomorrow on allotments and whether there is increased interest in them. Could you tell me how much land is currently designated allotments and how this has changed, on a year-by-year basis, over the last five years?

This is ideally for a report tomorrow.

Environment Department response:

The Environment Department's Evidence Report 'Open Space and Outdoor Recreation Survey 2013' published in June 2013 as part of the current Development Plan Review process, includes information about outdoor recreation facilities including allotments in section 4.6 of the report.

The formal review of the existing Development Plans (the Rural Area Plan 2005 and the Urban Area Plan 2002) began in January 2012.

A link to the report is below:

Unfortunately, there is no comparative historical data available concerning allotments so it is not possible to determine trends based on this information.
