Update - Coastal Defence Repairs at Bulwer Avenue

Tuesday 23 September 2014

Media Enquiry from Guernsey Press:

Can the department please give an update as to how the works at Bulwer Avenue are progressing. When are they expecting to finish, will the replaced wall be stronger than it was before and what is the total expected cost? So far, is it likely to come within budget.

Environment Department Response:

The Environment Department can confirm that the stone masonry repairs at Bulwer Avenue are on schedule and progressing well.  The contractor for the masonry repairs is Stoneworks and the works should be completed by the end of October.

In early October over 2,000 tonnes of large granite boulders quarried from Le Varde will be delivered to the car park and stockpiled in readiness for the installation of the new rock armour toe along 100m at the base of the wall.  The rock armour works will start in November and are scheduled to complete before Christmas.

The costs of masonry repairs and rock armour work are estimated to be in the region of £500,000.  It is relatively early in the schedule of works but so far costs are within budget.
