Fermain Work

Wednesday 29 October 2014

Media Enquiry from Juliet pouteaux, Guernsey Press:

I was hoping to get an update from Jan about Fermain.

I know there was work done in August to remove the damaged pieces of wall and it was said then the repair work was unlikely to take place this year.

Where is the project currently, what sort of options is the department looking at for repairs (e.g. lower, smaller?) and how much could these repairs cost?

When will a decision be made on what repairs will take place and when is the department looking to get underway with the work?

Also, has anything been done to prevent more damage over the winter and are there worries more costly damage could be done before repairs take place?

Environment Department Response:

States Property Services Engineers are working on various options for Fermain. Subject to other coastal defence priorities and agreement of funding the intention is that works will start during spring after the worst of the winter weather. There are no predictions of cost at this stage. It is not practical to protect the damaged section of wall but as portions of the wall either side of the damaged area will be taken down during repairs it is unlikely that any damage resulting from winter storms will cause additional expenditure.
