Update - First Registration Tax

Environment Department Response to Media Enquiry from Guernsey Press.

Guernsey Press Enquiry:

I am doing an article about first registration tax and I wondered if the department could provide me with a definitive list of cars showing how the width duty and emissions tax would be applied?

We calculated our own table, in a previous paper, but we found it slightly confusing to work out the official width of some cars. The department will also see that the Motor Trades Association has done its own table, published on its Guernsey Car Tax group on Facebook. We would like to print the definitive list to avoid any confusion.

Environment Department Response:

The definitive list to which you refer does not exist as there are many hundreds, if not thousands, of vehicle makes and model variants in production.  For example, the currently produced basic Ford Focus (measuring 1858mm wide with its wing mirrors folded in) may only come in two build classes (5-door and Estate) which are identical in width but it also comes in at least 30 different model variants across those two build classes that can affect CO₂ emissions.  It is simply not possible to produce this data in a list covering all vehicle makes and models produced, but this information is available to the dealers (and public) through the manufacturers published specifications and will be detailed on the vehicle's official registration forms (usually the V55/1) used at the point of registration.

The majority of published lists are at best illustrative as without knowing an individual vehicle's exact engine size, fuel technology and overall specification the width and emissions figure will vary and hence the vehicle registration duty that may apply will differ from vehicle to vehicle in accordance with the attached tables.
