The Environment Department would like to give motorists advanced notice of the following major roadworks schemes that are scheduled for 2015.
Coordination
The Department has been working closely with the Public Services Department and Utility Companies to plan in their required works for 2015. The closures are considered in accordance with the Roadworks Policy which can be found at www.gov.gg/roadworks.
Joint Working
As has happened in previous years, Utility Companies have, and will continue, to work together in order to co-ordinate works to minimise disruption to the public. For example, at Easter, JT, Guernsey Electricity and Guernsey Water will all be putting in new services in Maurepas Road.
The Department also receives requests for non-urgent works. These are held until other works are required in the same road or can be accommodated without causing significant disruption.
Emergency Closures
Emergency works, such as Utility service failures, fallen trees and coastal flooding, can cause disruption, especially when they coincide with scheduled works in the same area. The Department will discuss the works with the contractor to establish likely timescales, temporary repairs and possible traffic management. It will also defer scheduled works until the emergency has been resolved.
Diversion Planning
Following approval being granted to undertake any works, the Traffic Services Unit will consider any required traffic management, e.g. diversions, one-ways or traffic signals. This is undertaken a few weeks in advance of the planned project in order to take into account any other works in the area and to liaise with interested parties, such as the bus company, Parishes and Guernsey Police. Consideration is given to residents in the area and one-way, no entry and speed restriction measures may be implemented. Consideration is also given to routes for heavy goods vehicles and the buses, which may need to follow an alternative diversion route to that for cars and light vehicles.
The Department would also like to remind motorists to use the official diversion routes. These are planned along the roads most suitable to carry the volume of traffic. The use of narrow lanes is the source of numerous complaints received by the Department and often leads to someone having to reverse, causing unnecessary risks.
2015 Major Projects
Below are details of two of the larger projects being undertaken in 2015:
Guernsey Water - Longfrie Wastewater Extension Project
On 5th January, Guernsey Water will move into Route du Longfrie and head, in sections, towards Route de Plaisance. This 27 week project is scheduled to be completed by the middle of July 2015. Further details, along with a map of the area, can be found here:

JT Fibre Network
JT is continuing to extend and develop its Access Network throughout 2015 in order to be in a position to provide both business and residential customers with services based on the superior capability of the fibre optic network being put in place. The Department is pleased to report that following discussions on the 2015 closures, JT has continued to show its desire to minimise the impact of this network expansion. This has included revising a number of routes and engaging with the Department at a very early stage. Further details can be found here:
