Environment Department response to media enquiry from Guernsey Press.
Guernsey Press Enquiry:
The European Union has decided that from 20 May 2018 only vehicles with valid MOT from their country of origin will be able to drive on European roads. Has the department been in touch with the EU about how Guernsey does not have an MOT to seek an exemption? If so, what was the outcome of the talks? If not, why not? Will the department pursue the introduction of a test or does it believe Guernsey vehicles will be able to continue to travel on European roads without an MOT? Why does it think this?
Environment Department Response:
The latest European rules on vehicle standards and testing are: 2014/45/EU; 2014/47/EU and 2014/45/EU.
To the best of the Environment Department's knowledge these Directives, which constitute the European Union Road Worthiness Package and came into force in 2014 and requires Member States to amend domestic legislation by 2017, do not contain such provisions as you allude to. It is quite possible that the European Directives are being misinterpreted but if you could provide the exact title of the European legislation you are relying on the Department will be able to confirm whether or not this is the case.
