Update - Salerie Car Park

Tuesday 10 February 2015

Guernsey Press Enquiry:

Would it be possible to get a comment from the department about Salerie Car park.

Firstly I understand the steps there that were damaged during the storms are now being repaired.

Could you confirm this please? If they are now being repaired, how long is work expected to take? What exactly does the work involve? How much does it cost?

Secondly I'm aware the plans for Salerie car park in light of the fatal cyclist incident have been approved.

Again could you confirm this and what will be the main changes to Salerie car park?

Environment Department Response:

I understand the steps there that were damaged during the storms are now being repaired. Could you confirm this please? If they are now being repaired, how long is work expected to take? What exactly does the work involve? How much does it cost?

As of Friday (30th January) the works to replace the wooden staircase and stainless steel handrails were complete.  The new staircase has been built from Opepe, which is very strong and able to withstand the marine environment with metal anti-slip treads fitted.   The cost of the staircase repairs were in the region of £15,000.

Barriers were temporarily left in place after completion allow for works during the low tides to clean algae from the slipway and pier beyond the steps for public safety.

I'm aware the plans for Salerie car park in light of the fatal cyclist incident have been approved.  Again could you confirm this and what will be the main changes to Salerie car park?

The Planning Division of the Environment Department has granted permission for the installation of four removable bollards at the QEII slipway access adjoining the Salerie car park. These will once installed, assist in reducing the risk of conflict between vehicles, cycles and pedestrians at this point.  The change does however require that the majority of boats being launched or retrieved from the slipway to be trailered around the perimeter of the car park which will require a total of 15 car parking spaces to be removed and 6 Guernsey Boat Owner's Association permit spaces to be relocated to the northern side of the marina.

Further measures that will be introduced are provision of a new section of roadway linking the top of the slipway with the south western corner of the car park and installation of a marked walkway within this lane.  This will require minor modifications to be made to the grass mound.  A lighting column will also be relocated to improve the ease of turn for vehicle and trailer combinations to the north of the recycling bins.  Car park markings will be introduced to limit the possibility of conflict within the car park between vehicles towing boats and other car park users.  Arrangements will be publicised in due course regarding the process to organise for the bollards to be removed to enable delivery or collection of large boats that cannot be trailered around the perimeter of the car park.

The Department is currently engaging with contractors and suppliers to establish a date for the works to be undertaken and a further media release will be issued as plans are firmed up.

In addition, the Department is going to examine the constraints concerning the grass mound adjacent to the QEII slipway in order to see whether it presents any potential to offset the aforementioned loss of parking spaces.
