Media Enquiry from Guernsey Press:
The department had planning permission to actually lay reinforced meshing stuff throughout the car park (currently it's only at the entrance). This is a permanent solution, so why is the department just, in essence, filling the holes which will of course erode again?
Environment Department Response:
Currently the Environment department spends approximately £1,000 per annum on maintenance for this car park. The most competitive price obtained for the installation of reinforced plastic cellular matting filled with aggregate meant there would be a pay-back period of 24 years, for a product which has a ten-year guarantee. Clearly the installation of a cellular matting surface did not make economic sense for this site.
Instead the decision was taken to increase the quantities of aggregate used to improve the car park surface. Whilst this is not a long term solution and will still require regular maintenance the repairs can be undertaken at far less cost. Bearing in mind the Environment Department is responsible for 40 coastal car parks it is essential that a tight control on costs is maintained when States budgets are stretched to the limit.
