Media Enquiry from Guernsey Press:
It has been sometime since we ran a story about the traffic problems around Hautes Capelles School. The last we covered was back in February when the department's active travel unit put forward three suggestions to solve the problem, the first of which was a one-way system from the school looping round into the St Sampson's High School one-way system.
Option two was an even bigger one-way system, which would take car drivers to the outskirts of Town before being able to turn around.
A third option of talking to land owners next to Route des Capelles to see if their land could be purchased to make the road or pavement wider did gain some support.
Given that it has been several months, would the active travel unit be able to give an up-date on what is happening:
Have any further discussions about the traffic issues taken place?
What option will be adopted for the area? When will this come into force?
How much will the implementing the new system cost?
Any other comments.
Environment Department Response:
In the absence of Strategy funding most workstreams, especially those that would require significant expense, have not been investigated further. However, in light of the recent States decision the options will be further assessed and investigated in due course. Projects to make areas around schools safer and to encourage active travel to and from school are a fundamental part of the Strategy.
