New artwork brings a pastoral scene to Bulstrode Oncology Unit

Monday 20 February 2012

With funding from Northern Trust, a beautifully conceived, stained-glass window has been installed in the Bulstrode Oncology Unit at the Princess Elizabeth Hospital.

The artwork is placed as an internal window, replacing a frosted glass partition in the Information Room. The artwork gives a lovely ambience to both the Treatment Room and the Information Room. It is equally beautiful from both inside the room and from the treatment lounge outside.

The design by Guernsey Glasscraft shows hills with a rising sun, a river framed by trees and a perching kingfisher. Along the river bank are flags and lily pads with a frog, while a dragon fly hovers above. The purpose was to 'bring the outside in', to give a sense of peace and quietude in a busy clinical area.

Guernsey Glasscraft has expertly, and delightfully, fulfilled this objective. Bulstrode Oncology Unit is grateful to Peter and Bryony Vivian for their care and attention to the project and for their generous contribution of time.

Karen Leach, Lead Nurse for Cancer & Palliative Care said:

"We are grateful to Northern Trust for funding the beautiful window, created so expertly by Bryony and Peter, which complements the existing artwork. Our patients can be in the department for up to six hours, so we are always looking for new ways to improve and enhance the environment".

Without Northern Trust's funding, the initiative wouldn't have been possible.

"Northern Trust has made this donation in memory of Tony Morvan, a vice-president who worked in Northern Trust's real estate and infrastructure team in Guernsey from May 2001, to May 2008 when he sadly lost his battle with cancer,' said Paul Cutts, Country Head, Channel Islands. 'On behalf of his many friends and colleagues at Northern Trust, we hope this stained-glass window will bring a sense of peace to patients and act as a symbol of Tony's positive approach and strength during his treatment".

The funds for the window were raised by Northern Trust staff in Guernsey and matched by a donation from the Northern Trust Guernsey Charitable Trust. The Northern Trust Guernsey Charitable Trust has a special focus on supporting a diverse range of local Guernsey initiatives across the spectrum of health, community, welfare and sporting activities. In 2011 more than 30 organisations were supported through donations, totalling in excess of £30,000. It also has a policy of matching fundraising efforts by staff for worthy causes.
