Workshops with stakeholder groups as part of the second phase of the Policy & Resource Plan emphasised the need for the States of Guernsey maximise its resources by setting clear priorities.
Additionally, feedback from the community as a result of public drop-ins focused on key issues such as securing reliable, sustainable and affordable air and sea links, ensuring the island has fit-for-purpose infrastructure, and education.
Representatives of 26 business and community groups attended the workshops, with the main messages for government being:
- Don't do everything; prioritising the work of government is not easy, but it is important
- Do different; the States must find different ways of working
- Have true partnerships; the community wants to work closer with the States to help develop solutions
- The community cares and wants the States to succeed; a clear message was sent that people want to engage with government
- Be innovative; the community wants the States to take calculated risks to make Guernsey an even better place to live and work
A summary detailing the feedback received as a result of the four stakeholder workshops and three public drop-ins has been published today.
Deputy Jonathan Le Tocq, Policy & Resources Committee Member, said:
'In order for the Policy & Resource Plan to have maximum impact on islanders' lives, it is vital that the States of Guernsey effectively prioritises what we want to achieve. It is inevitable that we will not be able to do everything, but by working with community groups and businesses we can ensure that all voices are heard by committees as each develops its programme of work.'
The first phase of the plan, Future Guernsey, was approved by the States Assembly in November 2016, and set out an ambitious 20-year vision for the island.
Phase two will see principal committees draw up plans setting out the policies they intend to develop and implement to help achieve against Future Guernsey's four themes - Our Economy, Our Quality of Life, Our Community and Our Place in the World.
These individual plans will be considered by the Policy & Resources Committee, which will then produce a consolidated plan to be debated by the States in June 2017.
