The Committee for the Environment & Infrastructure has published a frequently asked questions document about proposals to replace all 22 of the remaining Dart Myllennium buses with Euro VI Diesel StreetVibes - classified as 'Ultra Low Emissions Buses' - as part of Phase 2 of the bus replacement programme.
The document addresses a variety of questions, including further explanation about why no electric bus vehicle currently on the market meets the island's needs, the benefits of buying StreetVibe buses - 12 of which are already in service locally - and why it is not possible to wait until a suitable electric vehicle is available.
The Committee has outlined its plans for Phases 2 and 3 of the replacement programme. Given the deteriorating condition of the existing ageing fleet, it recommends that all 22 of the remaining Dart Myllennium buses - originally put into service in 2003 - are replaced now as part of Phase 2. This would leave just the eight slightly younger Dart Nimbus (2004/5) buses of the previous fleet pending Phase 3.
Various other options have been considered, and the FAQ document explains why these were not progressed.
The document also addresses what the community can expect from Phase 3 of the replacement programme, which is expected to be progressed by early 2020. This includes a commitment to continue investigating developments in alternative fuel options.
