Guernsey is joining Europe-wide events to mark 'Bunker Day' on Wednesday June 6th. Atlantikwall Europe is a network of organisations with an interest in preserving, interpreting and understanding the remains of Hitler's 'Atlantikwall'.
The Atlantic Wall was a system of coastal fortifications constructed by the Germans between 1942 and 1944, stretching 5,000 kilometers from Finland to western France. It was a massive engineering effort, often involving slave workers, and many of the bunkers, gun positions and other defensive features still survive. Events are being organised to promote less-visited sites to the public and provide opportunity for reflection on the meaning of these structures.
In Guernsey, volunteers from Festung Guernsey will open up Fort Hommet, including the Shell Shrine, M19 bunker and Personnel bunkers from 2.00pm - 5.00pm.
Castle Cornet will open 10-5pm as normal, but there will be a special tour of WW2 Castle at 2pm.
The German Naval Signals HQ at St Jacques is also open that day, 12.30-4.30pm
Normal admission rates to the Castle and Signals HQ apply, but Discovery Pass holders and accompanying Children are admitted free.
