Household Expenditure Survey December Update

Friday 14 December 2018

Nearly 450 households have now completed the Household Expenditure Survey, of which over 160 have been since the start of October when the survey team was expanded.

Over 550 more are needed before the end of the survey in April 2019 to reach the target total and achieve a representative sample. The survey is conducted over a full year to include all the seasonal variations in spending.

Survey fieldworkers will continue to be out and about during the whole of December and households can book an appointment to complete the survey at a time that suits them best.

Sheila Cameron, Project Leader, said:

"Recent volunteers have chosen to complete the survey during their Christmas break, when they have more spare time. Our fieldworkers can offer survey visits in the evenings, at weekends and flexibly during the day to meet the requirements of busy households. It will be business as usual for the survey team, since we need as many households as possible to take part."

As a thank you for taking part, every household is offered the choice of either a ticket for the quarterly cash prize draw with a top prize of £500, or a £25 dining voucher for one of Randall's local restaurants.

The dual purpose of the Survey is to create the Household Expenditure Report which provides insights to how consumers' spending patterns change over time and to update the basket of goods used to calculate inflation (see www.gov.gg/rpi). It is vital that the items in the basket are updated so they remain relevant to current spending habits in Guernsey.

To find out more or to volunteer to take part (at any time until April 2019) visit www.gov.gg/hes, email hes@gov.gg or phone 01481 717188.

The information collected in the survey is treated in the strictest confidence.
