Employment & Social Security are hopeful that people being made redundant from recent High Street closures will soon find work elsewhere in the sector.
This follows the news of Beghin's closure last week and the earlier closing of Miss Selfridge and HMV.
'We sympathise with anyone who has lost their job in these circumstances' said Deputy Michelle Le Clerc, President of ESS. 'The Job Centre always has vacancies for jobs in retail. There are 21 such vacancies listed on gov.gg today, and there is constant turnover. So we hope that people aren't without work for too long.'
'Don't delay in asking for a bit of help from us. The Job Centre will be pleased to help people with their job search. When we hear of a firm closing, we always try to contact the management to offer our assistance to the staff.'
Details of the total number of people unemployed are published quarterly. But Deputy le Clerc confirmed that at the end of January there were 305 people without any work at all. This was just 6 up on January last year.
