Recruitment is under way for the Board of Governors of The Guernsey Institute.
The Guernsey Institute will integrate three existing providers of further and higher education run or funded by the States: the College of Further Education, the Institute of Health & Social Care Studies and the GTA University Centre. The Guernsey Institute will start life on 1 July 2019. Initially its Board of Governors will operate on a shadow basis until governance and leadership is devolved through a new Education Law in 2020 or 2021.
The Committee for Education, Sport & Culture has already appointed the first three members of the Shadow Board. They are the chairs of the three existing organisations: Debbie Guillou, David Leafe and Julian Winser. They will be joined by a minimum of six other members, who will be appointed by the Committee in May or early June.
Anyone aged 18 or over can be a Governor. There is no requirement for applicants to have worked in education previously - they just need the skills, character and time to contribute to the new Shadow Board. There will be training available to help new Governors once appointed. The Guernsey Institute needs a range of professional knowledge on the governing board including education, finance, human resources, legal, marketing and public relations, property and estates management, and organisational change.
Being a Governor provides the opportunity to: make a real difference to young people and adult learners; give something back to the local community; and to use and develop skills in a board-level environment. The Shadow Board needs to have a balance and diversity of knowledge, skills and experience to enable it to be effective. There will also be a separate internal process to select one staff and one student Governor.
The process of creating the Shadow Board of Governors represents a major step forward in the Committee's transformation plans for Further and Higher Education. Governors will be essential in working with colleagues at The Guernsey Institute to shape the vision of the newly formed organisation and to support the integration process of the three existing providers.
In order to ensure that the Board will have a range of expertise and experience, applicants are asked to view the Governor Role Description and to complete an online expression of interest and skills audit. This can be accessed via www.gov.gg/fhtransformation.
