Industrial action held today by Unite the union members has put some pressure on services. Thankfully, however there has been little disruption to the public, and essential services at the hospital, airport and harbours have been maintained.
Waste facilities have remained open today, sewage collections are taking place on a prioritised basis and rubbish and recycling collections are expected to take place as normal tonight.
We do not anticipate any other disruption over the rest of this week in light of the decision to 'work to rule' by Unite members, but we are monitoring the situation across all States of Guernsey services and will issue further advice if there is any change.
With regards to the ongoing discussions around pay and conditions, the Policy & Resources Committee, which acts as employer on behalf of the States of Guernsey, will proactively engage with the industrial disputes process.
As stated in the Deputy Industrial Disputes Officer's statement issued yesterday, it has been deemed appropriate that the dispute be referred to either voluntary arbitration or an industrial tribunal; both established under the Industrial Disputes Law.
The Policy & Resources Committee will now focus on engaging with this process, and is committed to continuing dialogue with Unite the union.
