Guernsey and Alderney Walking for Health Scheme calls for volunteers to help more people get active and stay active

Thursday 12 September 2019

To support its busy programme of walks, the Guernsey and Alderney Walking for Health Scheme is calling for extra health walk leaders.

Volunteers are needed to assist in delivering a programme of regular short walks aimed at helping all kinds of people to lead a more active lifestyle and enjoy the many health and well-being benefits that walking brings.

The short 30 minute walks, every day of the week, except Saturdays, are aimed at adults who want to become a little fitter in the company of others. The walks take place at a variety of venues around the Island and in Alderney and all finish at a café so that walkers can have time to socialise with other walkers over a cup of tea.

Yvonne Le Page, scheme coordinator for the Bailiwick Scheme says;

"Our walks are very popular and so we need new volunteers to help us help others. Our walk leaders are a friendly bunch and provide all the advice and encouragement a new walker needs to build fitness at a pace that's right for them. You don't need to be extremely fit yourself to volunteer and we provide all the training you need for free. You'll soon be making a real difference by supporting all kinds of people to lead a more active lifestyle. There is always a lot of laughter on our walks so get in touch to join in the fun!"

Our next training day is Wednesday 16th October from 9.00am to 4.00 pm. If anyone is interested in taking part please call Public Health Services on 707311 or email Yvonne.lepage@gov.gg for an application pack.

The Guernsey Scheme is part of Walking for Health, England's largest nationwide of health walk schemes. Run by The Ramblers, hundreds of schemes are supported to offer short, free walks. Walks are open to everyone but are particularly suitable for those who may find it hard to be active due to health conditions. Through Walking for Health thousands of people are helped to discover the joys and health benefits of walking.
