IHSCS celebrates student achievements at 14th graduation event

Thursday 21 November 2019

The Institute of Health and Social Care Studies in partnership with Middlesex University (MU) is hosting its 14th graduation ceremony at St Pierre Park Hotel on the 6th December 2019.

The ceremony will mark the achievements of thirty eight students, twelve of whom have become Registered Nurses and are all employed within HSC. In the past 22 years, the Institute has supported a total of 318 students to become Registered Nurses; many now hold senior positions within care settings across the Islands.

This year sees the first cohort of Nursing Associates receive their awards. The Nursing Associates programme has been adopted within the health and social care sectors across England and the seven recipients of this award are the first to qualify and be admitted to the NMC (Nursing and Midwifery Council) register outside of England.

The Institute is also pleased to see the first cohort of students collect their Non-Medical Prescribing qualification. This demanding six-month course prepares experienced specialist nurses to prescribe medication within their scope of practice, thus promoting a seamless service and a positive patient experience.

Students can further their studies by accessing a Masters programme, designed by the academic team at the Institute and validated by Middlesex University; this programme is designed with the needs of local services in mind. The Institute is awarding a Postgraduate Certificate in Professional Education to three students, a postgraduate diploma in professional practice to two students and awarding a Masters Degree to a further three students. In addition, three students have completed their degree level studies and will receive a BA(Hons) in Health and Social Care Practice. These students study the programme part-time and work within various fields of health and social care as well as nursing.

Tracey McClean, Head of Institute, said;

'The students have all worked very hard, we are proud of their achievements, the Nursing Students performed well with five receiving a first class honours degree and three an Upper Second Class Classification; one of the Master's students gained the qualification with Merit. We are committed to providing quality education and supporting the development of the workforce delivering a range of services across the Bailiwick. It has been 50 years since the first cohort of Enrolled Nurses completed their qualifications in Guernsey, we have come a long way since then, offering a diverse portfolio of courses which are accessible to a wide range of students within and outside of the field of health and social care'.

Jacki Hughes, Executive Principal of The Guernsey Institute said;

'The graduation event is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the success and achievements of our students as they embark on the next part of their journey. As The Guernsey Institute begins its life and we start to see the considerable benefits of integration, I look forward to many more opportunities to celebrate our students' success and to recognise Tracey and her teams for their continued hard work and dedication to the education of health and social care professionals.'

The next intake of pre-registration nursing students will be in September 2020. Anyone interested in applying for this programme should contact Samantha Smedley, Senior Administrator, on 707445 or by email at samantha.smedley@gov.gg.
