Friday 22 November 2019

Experts from the UK's National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) were in the island yesterday to deliver a presentation about how organisations can improve their cyber security awareness and resilience.

The fully subscribed 'Cyber Security: Keeping You and Your Business Safe' event was designed around providing advice and signposting the suite of free resource materials developed by the NCSC and available from their website.

Talks during the morning by the NCSC presenters were given about how small to medium enterprises could quickly, easily and without cost to business, could improve their cyber security.

There was a demonstration of a free NCSC resource, "Exercise in a Box" - a complete package of exercise material, which helps organisations find out how resilient they are to cyber-attacks and how to practice their response in a safe environment.

Additional advice and guidance on how to protect against the most common forms of cyber-attack and discussions on how to encourage board-level cyber-security were also held.

The NCSC representatives also updated attendees on the role the NCSC plays in providing cyber incident support.

States of Guernsey Lead Cyber Security Officer Emma Jones said:

"Having these world-leading cyber-security experts in the island was a great opportunity to capitalise on their expertise. We had an excellent turnout from business, government, the third sector and the information security community, and much positive feedback on the usefulness of the event. We hope that this will be one of a series of ongoing quarterly events to help improve cyber security awareness. Cyber security is now a central aspect to most businesses, and it is vital they are aware of the latest threats and how they can be mitigated through the steps discussed here this morning."
