The Committee for Education, Sport & Culture is seeking public comments on a number of proposed changes to the Education Law.
In January 2018, the States agreed that the current Education (Guernsey) Law, 1970, would be replaced with a new law setting out the educational aims and aspirations of a modern society. The aim of this review is to modernise the legislation so that it meets the educational aims and aspirations of Guernsey, is consistent and aligns with other legislation and international standards.

Why does the law need to change?
- It is recognised that the current law has not been fit for purpose for many years. A number of areas such as equality of opportunity, home education, special educational needs and disabilities will be included in the new law. The law will also provide a legal framework for the governance of schools and further education, underpinned by the Committee's overall objectives that the new law is permissive and flexible.
Who is being consulted?
- The views of internal stakeholders and some targeted external stakeholder groups have been incorporated through discussions with educational professionals, and as part of the Education Law Working Group which has facilitated the review.
Aim of the new law
- The new law aims to set out a framework for the provision of an efficient, effective and sustainable yet flexible public system of education.
