Running 100 miles while isolating

Friday 21 August 2020

The Headteacher of Alderney's St Anne's School, Martin Winward, is running 100 miles around his garden, to help him get through his self-isolation period.

Mr Winward is doing this to raise money for the Alzheimer's Society, after the loss of a loved one with Dementia during COVID-19 lockdown.

He wanted to do something pro-active to support work trying to tackle the incurable illness and decided to raise funds through taking on the challenge. His inspiration for this was his former neighbour, Peter Allen, who was a trusted and loyal family friend for Mr Winward until his passing.

Mr Winward said:

"I think we have all had to cope with challenges, big and small, in the last few months and for those experiencing loss of loved ones, the lockdown has made all the more 'real' our commitment to remaining resilient and working together to get ourselves in a better place both personally and for the nation as a whole. Challenging myself with the Run for Dementia was not only a way to create a positive, but also a way for me to look closer at how I can provide opportunities for young people in my school to better understand Dementia and work with local services both in Alderney and Guernsey to ensure we prepare young people for their futures with better understanding."

So far, Mr Winward's Just Giving page (https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/martin-winward) has raised £405 with 19 supporters, although his intial goal was only £100.

He is now hoping to push the total higher as he runs further.
