A new guidance document 'Election Expenditure and Donations' has been published today to seek to provide more clarity to candidates and political parties on the rules regarding spending before and during the regulated period.
Concerns had been raised by some members of the public regarding political parties and their affiliated candidates spending money in advance of the 'regulated period' promoting their parties and their prospective candidates. However the States of Guernsey has reviewed and revised the guidance, to ensure it aligns with statutory provisions. The new version has corrected errors that are likely to have caused confusion, and we apologise for that.
The States of Guernsey has responded directly to those who made enquiries as result of this confusion, confirming that the matters have been considered and that it has been concluded that there has not been a breach of legislation relating to electoral expenses, as detailed in the enquiries.
The new guidance is now available on www.election2020.gg.
