Timeframe extended for eligible passengers to obtain a new concessionary bus pass following successful uptake of the initiative

Monday 19 October 2020

Traffic & Highway Services and CT Plus are pleased to report a high uptake in the new concessionary bus pass initiative.

Since the launch of the scheme on 22nd September, over 3,000 concessionary bus passes have now been issued.

The high numbers of applicants over the past few weeks has however resulted in the CT Plus shop becoming very busy during certain times of the day. In order to reduce the waiting time of applicants, Driver & Vehicle Licensing have decided to extend the timeframe that existing concessionary passengers have to obtain their new pass for continued free travel.  These passes, which can be used from now, will be necessary for free travel from 1st January 2021.  This extension gives an additional two months for eligible passengers to apply for their pass.

Islanders over 65 have enjoyed free bus travel since 2001. In order to standardise the type of ID presented to drivers, a specific concessionary bus pass was rolled out last month. As with all other Puffin passes in issue, concessionary pass holders will be required to scan their pass as they board. This will make boarding quicker and easier for passengers, whilst ensuring the accurate recording of passenger statistics.

This pass entitles passengers to free travel on all scheduled bus services, with the only exception being the Friday and Saturday 'Nightowl' late services, giving continued freedom of access to many areas of the island.

Bus passengers that are aged 65 years and over and reside in Guernsey, Alderney or Herm are eligible to apply for the concessionary bus pass and are encouraged to take advantage of the scheme by obtaining one.

The cost of obtaining a concessionary pass is £2.50 and application forms are available from the CT Plus shop at the Albany (behind the bus terminus). Applications are usually able to be processed whilst the applicant waits. Should an applicant have difficulty in attending the shop in person, please contact CT Plus' customer care team on 01481 700456 for alternative arrangements to be made.

Applicants are reminded that a recognised form of ID stating the applicants age will be required in order to apply, alongside a passport-sized photograph to protect the card against fraud or misuse. A photo can be taken at the shop if required for ease of the applicant.

The cards have a validity of 15 years, after which time concessionary passengers will be required to re-apply and will be charged at the rate of that time.
