With travel to Europe now happening more frequently, Islanders intending to drive to and through Europe are reminded of certain changes which have occurred following Brexit.
Persons driving to Europe should be aware of the following:
- While UK vehicle identifiers (by way of number plate stickers) will be changing from 'GB' to 'UK' from 28 September 2021, Guernsey and Alderney will remain with GBG and GBA respectively;
- International Driving Permits (IDPs) are no longer required for driving in France and several other EU countries (full list of countries available at https://gov.gg/drivingabroadinternationaldrivingpermitEU). However, we are aware of some European hire car companies still requesting an IDPs despite them not technically being required. Therefore, travellers may wish to obtain an IDP anyway if intending to hire a vehicle.
Further information and guidance documents are available at https://gov.gg/drivingabroadinternationaldrivingpermitEU. The post-Brexit situation for driving in the EU continues to evolve as the UK and EU Member States undertake further negotiations. Guidance on this page will continue to be updated as information becomes available.
