Plans for eight parish events on Liberation Day are well underway with a whole variety of live music, family entertainment and fun filled activities on offer from the eight parishes taking part.

Plans for eight parish events on Liberation Day are well underway with a whole variety of live music, family entertainment and fun filled activities on offer from the eight parishes taking part.

Funding has been made available to all 10 parishes to help them host community-based events as a part of making Liberation Day a whole island-wide celebration.

Deputy Sue Aldwell, Committee for Education, Sport & Culture said 'We invited parishes to put on an event of their choosing, big or small but on May 9th itself, it is so very important that we celebrate on the Islands unique and special day - the actual day  Islanders were given their freedom back, which means so much to so many.

The parish events also tie-in with the Island-wide cavalcade, giving parishioners the chance to celebrate within their community. Some parishes have opted for big celebrations, some for smaller ones but either way it is the taking part that matters and I know the community will be truly grateful for the efforts of the douzaine's that are taking part in marking the 77th Anniversary of Liberation Day.'

For a taste on what is on offer, St Saviour has a family fun day and picnic planned with live music from Bordeaux Blue. Tea and cake will be served up alongside arts and crafts activities for the children as they await the excitement of the cavalcade which will once again make its way through every parish.

In St Pierre du Bois, thanks to sponsorship by Rocq Capital, a marquee on L'Eree Common will host local bands including Buffalo Huddleston and local favourites, Space Pirates of Rocquaine. A climbing wall, activities from Outdoor Guernsey and food by Chefan are all on the menu.

St Andrew's family fun day will be found along Les Buttes and starts at 11am. Live music, chalk drawing and a bouncy castle will keep the children entertained into the early evening. At the Last Post, children's fancy dress, a teddy bears' picnic and other traditional games will be on offer along with Crown & Anchor and a BBQ.

In Torteval, a family lunch will take place at the Parish Hall, timed to follow the cavalcade which will pass through the parish around midday.

Torteval Senior constable, Becky Link commented

"Our parish event was enjoyed by all who attended last year and the general feeling was it was lovely to keep events within the parish so everyone of all ages is able to enjoy the day, there is no pressure to have to go to town, we can be with family and friends in our community whilst reflecting on those who surrendered so much in order that we have our freedom now"

Activities are also planned for St Martin's Community Centre Field with a family fun day, a tea party and entertainment from 12 o'clock, and Vale are hosting a Liberation Day exhibition from 6th- 9th followed by a tea party on the 9th May.

The Castel Douzaine is hosting a family event opposite the Loophole Tower at Vazon, as well as being the perfect vantage point for the cavalcade there will be stalls, bouncy castles, tractors, livestock and a tombola.

Forest are hosting a Retro Festival with live music from 'The Three Sixties' at the Mallard and Venture Inn.

The commemorative events which take place during the morning of Liberation will remain in their traditional St Peter Port locations.

More information about the parish events, the Royal visit, the island-wide cavalcade, fireworks, church service and Castle Cornet's Liberation Music at the Castle can be found at Liberationday.gg.
