Vehicle Ownership FAQs

On this page you will find the answers to a number of frequently asked questions in relation to vehicle ownership.

  • I am selling my vehicle, how do I transfer it to the new owner and how much does it cost?

    • Vehicles can be transferred by simply completing the reverse of your vehicle registration certificate and entering in the new keeper's details. Both parties should sign and date the document. It is the current keeper's responsibility to transfer the vehicle and so they should submit the top part of the form and hand the bottom part to the new keeper. The fee to transfer a vehicle is £34.00.  If you would like to pay by Credit/Debit Card, please provide a daytime contact number with the transfer documentation and a member of staff will call you for payment.
    • Further details can be found here.
  • I am selling my vehicle but would like to retain the registration number. What are my options?

    • If you would like to keep your registration number for your future use you may retain it for £110.00 for a period of 1 year. It is recommended that you retain your number in advance of selling the vehicle by completing an exchange of registration number form.
    • Further details can be found here.
  • I have scrapped my vehicle, do I need to notify anyone?

    • Yes, you must notify Driver & Vehicle Licensing. The easiest way is to complete the relevant section on the reverse of your vehicle registration certificate.  Alternatively, if you have lost this or have an old log book, please complete the notification form found here.
  • I have exported my vehicle, what do I need to do?

    • If you have exported your vehicle and/or sold the vehicle to someone off-Island, you must retain the vehicle registration certificate for the vehicle in order to re-register the vehicle elsewhere. Once exported, you should notify Driver & Vehicle Licensing by completing the notification form found here.
  • I am moving to the Island, what do I need to do?

    • New residents can drive using a valid full UK/Jersey/foreign driving licence for up to 1 year. We are able to exchange the majority of full driving licences. However, in some cases where no exchange agreements exist, a new resident may need to take out a provisional driving licence and pass a Guernsey driving test within 1 year in order to continue driving.
    • Further details on exchanging a driving licence can be found here.
    • Imported vehicles need to be registered within 14 days of arriving in the Island. The vehicle cannot be used on the public highway after this time until it is registered in Guernsey.
    • Further details on registering a vehicle can be found here.
