Wednesday 20 July 2022
On Friday 22 July, a 13-gun salute will be fired for Major-General John Gaspard Le Marchant (9 February 1766 - 22 July 1812).
It will mark the 210th anniversary of his death at the Battle of Salamanca.
Le Marchant is recognised as one for the finest British Cavalry commanders of his age and served in the French Revolutionary and Peninsular Wars.
He transformed the British Cavalry through training and helped design a new light cavalry sabre. He was also instrumental in the formation of the first Royal Military College for infantry and cavalry officers.
The gun salute will be fired at noon and afterwards Dennis Le Moignan will read a dedication to Le Marchant to tell the full story of Le Marchant's life and his achievements.
The Castle will be open to the public and normal admission charges will apply. Entry will be free to Discovery Pass holders.
Anyone wishing to attend must arrive at the Castle before 11.45am.
