Thursday 04 August 2022

Guernsey Museum at Candie is excited to be opening the People's Collection art exhibition from Saturday 6 August.

The exhibition celebrates the island's art collections cared for by Guernsey Museums & Galleries on behalf of the people of Guernsey. Enjoy a wide selection of original artworks from watercolours of the archaeological excavations at La Varde in 1837 to an oil portrait after Rembrandt's 'Man with a Feathered Beret', a maritime sketch by Victor Hugo and the beautiful 'Seaweed Gatherers on the Coast of Guernsey' by Paul Jacob Naftel. The exhibition is open daily until 12th October 2022.

The collections established by Frederick Corbin Lukis, Thomas Guille and Frederick Allès of the Guille-Allès Library and Museum, and William Wilfred Carey were combined to create the Guernsey Museum & Art Gallery in 1978. The Museum continues to collect artworks that tell the story of Guernsey and connect people with the Bailiwick's unique environment and history. Meet some of the personalities, explore familiar places from a different perspective and witness important local events. You might be surprised by what you find.

Helen Glencross, Head of Heritage Services said: "We are excited to reopen the exhibition gallery after the successful completion of the work to upgrade the environmental systems.  It is wonderful to share these amazing paintings with museum visitors over the summer.  We're looking forward to receiving comments about people's favourite artworks on display."

Guernsey Arts present A Journey to the End by Chris Simcox at the Greenhouse Gallery until 30 September. The Museum foyer display marks the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. Guernsey Museum is open daily 10.00-17.00 with free entry for Discovery Pass holders and their children.
