Monday 14 November 2022

Sunday 20 November is the last day to visit 'For the Love of the Land' at Guernsey Museum at Candie. This exhibition of original work by British photographer Siân Davey offers an intimate exploration of Guernsey's farming communities. It is presented by the Guernsey Photography Festival and Guernsey Museums & Galleries.

Coming from a family of farmers herself, Davey immersed herself in the local agricultural environment for six weeks as part of her residency. The resulting work brings together a series of photographs that pay tribute to the custodians of Guernsey's countryside, while highlighting the sacrifice, dedication, pride, fragility and vulnerability associated with their lifestyle.

Visitors to the exhibition have commented on the "Marvellous photos - beautiful light and compositions but also great feeling for the subject, tenderness and humour. A treat!"

The Guernsey Photography Festival and Guernsey Museums & Galleries would like to give special thanks to Michael Bray, President of the Guernsey Farmers Association; Andrew Tabel, Guernsey Dairy's Managing Director; and all the farmers and their families who welcomed Siân into their homes and were so generous with their time and patience.

Siân Davey worked as a psychotherapist for 15 years before launching a career in photography in 2014, drawing on her experiences to inform her practice. Her work is held in public collections including by the V&A and she has been the recipient of numerous awards.
Since 2012, the Guernsey Photography Festival and Guernsey Museums have commissioned international artists to produce a specific body of work about the Bailiwick of Guernsey. In exchange for their commission, each artist donates a selection of limited edition prints to the Guernsey Museum which are held for the benefit of the Bailiwick.

Guernsey Museum is open daily 10.00-16.00 with free entry for Discovery Pass holders and their children.
