Update - Sandy Hook Traffic Issues

Thursday 05 April 2012

Environment Department response to media enquiry from Guernsey Press.

Guernsey Press enquiry:

One of our reporters spoke to Sandy Hook residents for our new Your Street feature. Several said there were issues with lorries using the lane as a short cut and also complained of a 'blind corner' in the road.

One suggestion was that the road could be made one way.

I just wanted to give the department the opportunity to respond to this if it wished?

Response:

Sandy Hook is designated as a 'neighbourhood' road on the Department's Traffic Management Road Hierarchy. The road is relatively narrow in places, particularly towards the junction with Route Carre, and for the most part does not have any pedestrian pavements.

There are many other neighbourhood roads around the Island that are similar to Sandy Hook, both in terms of traffic volumes and speeds. Introducing traffic management measures such as one-way systems in all of these roads is just not practical or justifiable. Indeed, there are a number of disadvantages with introducing one-ways systems, which need to be balanced against the advantages. Making a road one-way often increases the speed of traffic, it also sometimes prevents access in and out of a property or makes it more difficult (if an access is angled in a certain direction) and it displaces traffic to other roads which in turn can have knock on effects.

Having taking all the factors into account, including checking the Police accident statistics for the last 3 years for this road (for which there is no significant recorded accident history), the Department has no plans to make alterations to the traffic flow along Sandy Hook.
