Ultrasound baby scans - change in policy WEF 1 January 2021

Tuesday 03 November 2020

HSC has today given early notice of a change in policy regarding the number of observers/guests who can attend an ultrasound baby scan.

With effect from 1 January 2021, only one guest will be able to be present at any baby scan appointment.

Alistair Richards, Radiology Services Manager said:

'An ultrasound baby scan is a detailed medical examination and the sonographer is performing very detailed checks on the baby.

On occasion, having more than one observer/guest attending can distract the sonographer and, in line with many other NHS hospitals we need to ensure that concentration is maintained and important observations are not missed.

We are making this change to provide the absolute best possible service we can for mum and baby(ies)'

From January 1st 2021, mum to be can bring one adult only to their examination.  The accompanying person can be an older child (14 years or older) instead of a partner but they must be able to sit quietly during the examination.
