If you have a medical condition or disability which means you require care in order to live at home, you may be able to claim benefit.

If you are providing care for someone living at home you may be eligible to claim a carer's allowance.  In order to claim these benefits, you need to be registered with Social Security and fulfil the required residential qualifications. Please click on the headings below for further information.

  • Severe disability benefit

    • If you have a physical or mental disability which requires a lot of attention or supervision by day or night, you may be eligible to receive severe disability benefit.
    • Payment of severe disability benefit depends on the level of care you need:
      • by day - if you require frequent attention in connection with your bodily functions; or constant supervision throughout the day in order to avoid substantial danger to yourself or others; or
      • by night - if you require prolonged or repeated attention in connection with your bodily functions; or constant supervision throughout the night in order to avoid substantial danger to yourself or others.
  • How do I claim severe disability benefit?

    • The following conditions need to be met:
      • You must have needed the required level of care for at least 3 months (if you have a terminal illness this rule does not apply).
      • During the last 12 months you must have lived in the island for 26 weeks.
      • If you were not born locally you must have been living in the island for the last 5 years (if you have come from Jersey or the UK this rule may not apply).
    • Severe disability benefit is not payable if you are receiving long-term care benefit.
    • To make a claim you should fill in the Application for Severe Disability Benefit forms which are available from the office by phoning the Pensions & Allowances helpline on 221000. We will also send you a claim pack which contains everything you need to make your claim.   • How much will I get with severe disability benefit?

    • Severe disability benefit is paid directly into your bank account. But if your annual household income is more than a certain limit you will not be entitled to benefit. 
    • The current benefit rates and annual income limits are set out in the Benefit Payment & Contribution Rates - Leaflet 50, which is provided in the downloads section of this page.
  • Carer's allowance

    • If you are aged over 18 and caring for a severely disabled person for at least 35 hours per week you may be able to get carer's allowance.
    • In order to receive carer's allowance, the person you are looking after must be in receipt of severe disability benefit.
  • How do I claim carer's allowance?

    • To make a claim you should fill in Application for Carer's Allowance - CA2 which is available from Social Security by phoning the Pensions & Allowances helpline on 221000. Alternatively the form is also available in the downloads section on this page.
  • How much will I get with carer's allowance?

    • The current benefit rates and annual income limits are set out in Benefit Payment & Contribution Rates - Leaflet 50, which is provided in the downloads section of this page.
