To protect the island's water resources and environment, any chemicals such as weedkillers, pesticides, solvents, and thinners need to be disposed of responsibly. Never dispose of unwanted product, diluted product or rinsing's in household drains, streams, ditches, or ponds.
Domestic/household advice
Disposal of products
- Any containers with product still in them should NOT be put in a recycling bag or into general waste and instead should be taken free of charge to the Household Waste & Recycling Centre at Longue Hougue (www.gov.gg/hwrc) in its original container or clearly labelled. Please ensure containers are intact with the lids tightly closed to avoid leaks.
Can I recycle empty containers?
- If the product is completely empty the packaging can go into your household blue bag if it is made from plastic or tin (including lids and spray nozzles). Before recycling, please rinse the empty container three times and ensure the rinsing's are disposed of carefully, for example on a gravelled path or area of bare ground where it will seep into the ground and not puddle. Replace the lids on the containers before placing in your blue bag.
Unlabelled containers and large volumes of known products
- If you come across unlabelled containers of chemicals (for example when purchasing a new property) and for any larger volumes of labelled products (more than would fit in a large plastic crate), please contact the Hazardous Waste Technical Officer, hazardouswaste@gov.gg or 01481 226263 to arrange a collection. This service is free of charge for households.
Prohibited chemicals
- Please contact the Hazardous Waste Technical Officer, hazardouswaste@gov.gg or 226263. Please do not take them to the Household Waste and Recycling Centre at Longue Hougue.
- More information on prohibited chemicals can be found Hazardous substances (HSE guidance) - States of Guernsey (gov.gg)
