More than 3,000 homes and premises now benefitting from fibre broadband

Tuesday 25 April 2023

The Guernsey Fibre Network is now being used by more than 3,000 homes and premises.

Sure and the States of Guernsey are working in partnership on a major project to convert all Guernsey premises to a fibre-based broadband and landline service by the end of 2026.

The Guernsey Fibre Network uses fibre optic cables rather than the traditional copper cables, enabling faster download speeds, depending on the broadband package selected by the subscriber.

The States has invested significantly in this initiative in a bid to future-proof the island's digital infrastructure and facilitate faster broadband speeds and wider access to broadband services for islanders.  In addition to being more energy efficient and requiring less maintenance than the copper network, fibre broadband offers download speeds of up to 1GBps (1000Mbps), which is more than 10 times faster than traditional broadband.

The fibre rollout is ahead of schedule, with 9,000 homes ready to switch to fibre of which over 3,000 have already connected.

The project aims to get 30,000 premises connected by the end of 2026, at which point the copper network will be retired.

Approximately 80 jobs have been created locally to implement this major digital infrastructure development plan.
