The work to install a replacement MRI scanner at the PEH is due to start today.
The replacement MRI scanner will be commissioned inside the radiology department and a mobile MRI scanner will be sited in the car park outside radiology for the 22 weeks it will take to complete the installation.
The mobile MRI scanning unit has a reception 'pod' which will be staffed at all times to receive patients.
Alistair Richards, Radiology Services Manager said:
'The replacement of the MRI scanner is part of a much wider Imaging Replacement Programme which has been running for a number of years. This programme has transformed the capability of our services across the Bailiwick for the benefit of those we serve.
One of the biggest demands in radiology in the Bailiwick is for MRI scans. This replacement MRI scanner has an important role to play in the future health care of Islanders. MRI uses magnetic radio waves rather than radiation and provides excellent quality imaging for our patients.'
The scanner, which cost £1.3m has been funded from the States Capital Investment Portfolio together with a smaller 'dexascanner' (which measures bone densities), concludes the major Imaging Replacement Programme at the PEH. This Programme has delivered the following equipment for the Bailiwick across the four years it has been running:
2016: Fluoroscopy Room (X-Ray room 3),Mobile Fluoroscopy Unit 1,Mobile X-Ray machine 1 & 2,X-Ray Room 1 (Spaceship decor), Dental X-ray machine. 2017:Mammography machine. 2017/18: 14 Ultrasound scanners (Various locations including Radiology, Alderney, Cardiology, Breast Unit, ED, Maternity Ward, ICU, Theatres). 2019:SPECT CT Scanner(Replacing the old Gamma Camera),CT scanner. 2020 (Ongoing)
