Take the leap on No Smoking Day

Tuesday 07 February 2012

Wednesday 14 March 2012 is No Smoking Day - find out what support is available on Guernsey to help stub out the habit.

The No Smoking Day charity has merged with the British Heart Foundation making the campaign bigger and better, helping more people to quit.

2012 will be an extraordinary year across the British Isles, particularly with the Olympics, and an ideal opportunity to encourage a healthy lifestyle and smoke free life.

2012 is also a leap year - what better time to take a leap than on Wednesday 14 March?

No Smoking Day strives to be empowering, supportive and positive, and with free support from Guernsey Quitline smokers are four times more likely to succeed in quitting. Quitline can also supply free Nicotine Replacement Therapy and proven drug therapy to smokers who want to stop. For further information or to make an appointment they can phone 233170.

The benefits of stopping smoking start in just 20 minutes with both the blood pressure and pulse returning to normal. After 24 hours the carbon monoxide will be eliminated from the smokers' body and their lungs will start to clear out the tar. No nicotine is left in the smokers' body after just 48 hours of stopping and the sense of taste and smell is greatly improved.

On top of the health benefits, the average smoker could save £168 within a month of quitting or over £2,000 in a year.

Posters, leaflets and resources are available for organisations and workplaces to use to encourage smokers to consider stopping smoking on or before No Smoking Day. To order these resources please contact the Health Promotion Unit on 707311.

Quitline will be available on Saturday 10 March and Wednesday 14 March in the Street bus which will be parked by the Liberation Monument, White Rock.
