The Committee for the Environment & Infrastructure is seeking public comments on a number of proposed Speed Limit changes. If agreed, the changes will be implemented by way of Regulation in accordance with The Road Traffic (Speed Limits & Trials) Ordinance, 1987.
The proposal is to introduce and extend 25mph speed limits to broadly cover all Local Centres and Main Centre Outer Areas as defined in the Island Development Plan. This is the first of a two phase review of the Island's speed limits. Further consultation in respect of Phase 2 will follow in due course.
The areas selected for Phase 1 are recognised as community focal points where there is a higher concentration of residential properties, schools or amenities. By reducing the speed limits in these more densely populated areas, the Committee considers it will make roads safer for vulnerable road users and encourage more people to walk and cycle, especially when undertaking shorter journeys which will improve health, enhance the environment and minimise pollution, which accords with the vision for travel on the island as contained in the Integrated Transport Strategy. In addition, it is proposing to introduce a 25mph speed limit in the vicinity of Blanchelande College as it was noted that it is the only one of the Island's schools that is currently situated in a 35mph zone.
